Bonhams Sells Historically Significant George Daniels Watch

Following the death of renowned motorcycle collector and enthusiast Robert White earlier last year after a battle with cancer, Bonhams hosted a charitable auction of White’s eclectic collection of valuables. The assortment included rare camera and camera parts, motorcycles, and cars, but the sale of a spectacularly rare timepiece from master horologist George Daniels piqued our interest.

Experts for the better part of the 20th century considered Daniels one of the (if not the de facto) best watchmakers of his time. Aside from his numerous literary contributions, including the industry-standard Watchmaking, Daniels is credited with the development of the co-axial escapement Omega now uses in many of its watches.

Daniels, an independent watchmaker, did not complete many timepieces in his lifetime. Those he did finish were immensely complex, well-crafted, and classically proportioned. Before he died in 2011, Daniels collaborated with his partner and student Roger Smith to create a watch celebrating the 35th anniversary of the co-axial escapement.

Only 35 of those timepieces finished by Smith—a watchmaking legend in his own right—made their way to collectors. White’s watch, No. 24, sold for $291,000.

Bonhams also auctioned off a number of White’s extensive motorcycle and car collection. From the two-wheeled variety, our eye was pinned to his fabulous 1951 Vincent 998cc Series-C Black Shadow, which sold for an impressive $106,000.

Our pick of the four-wheeled lot was a 1959 AC Ace-Bristol Roadster, a fine example of the Ace roadster before the AC Cobra overshadowed the six-cylinder two-seater. The 1959 AC sold for $330,000.

Check out these items and many more at Bonhams’ recent Robert White sale.
